Caffeine Toxicity - Caffeine is the daily drug for millions of workers each and every day

Apr 21, 2022

What’s the buzz?

Energy drinks are a booming business in Australia and caffeine is the daily drug for millions of workers each and every day.

With the promise of increased energy levels, improved performance and concentration, it's little wonder these two beverages are so popular, especially for those who work long hours, shift work or who experience constant fatigue.

But there comes a point where these two stimulants can adversely affect health.

Take caffeine for example. This seemingly harmless stimulant speeds up the brain and nervous system. Many people use caffeine to help keep them alert and awake.

Side-effects of consuming caffeinated drinks can include:

  • Increased alertness and energy
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Increase in urination
  • Changes in mood

Common caffeinated drinks include tea, coffee, cola and energy drinks. However when too many are consumed – most experts recommend no more than three cups of coffee or no more than two energy drinks a day – rebound fatigue may set. Too much caffeine can affect sleep quality and contribute to headaches, insomnia, nervousness, diarrhoea, tremors and impaired coordination.

According to a recent report in The Medical Journal of Australia, increasingly, toxicity from caffeine overdose via energy drinks is being reported to hospital and poison centres. The report found that caffeine toxicity or overdose can be similar to amphetamine poisoning and can lead to seizures, psychosis and cardiac arrhythmias.

Adverse effects recorded have included:

  • Heart palpitations
  • Shaking and tremors
  • Restlessness
  • Agitation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Chest pains
  • Trouble sleeping

In 2014, a 35 year-old Perth truck driver Mick Clark died suddenly – he was a regular runner and never smoked – however it was reported he consumed four caffeinated energy drinks a day as well as coffee. According to the coroner’s report, the man’s cause of death was caffeine toxicity and myocardial scarring. He is not alone.
